Mānawatia a Matariki

This year, St Martins conducted their first ever Matariki service.

We all congregated outside as we patiently waited to hear the karanga that was led by one of our beautiful wahine, as we were welcomed into the whare karakia.

Matariki is a time of remembrance. A time where whanau and wider communities gather to reflect on the year that has been. A chance for us all to celebrate what has been, and look forward into the future.

During our service today, our congregation were given the chance to remember those who have passed on. In honouring of our first Matariki service, we wanted to remember those of our loved ones who have passed away. As each name was called out, a candle was lit at the front of the church. What a powerful moment this was.

After the service, we shared kai! There was an abundance of food! We shared hangi, fried bread, salads, desserts, and most importantly, we shared laughter and joy.

We hope that the message that was shared today and the chance for reflection, allowed you the opportunity to enjoy our first Matariki service.

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone for their contribution to our Matariki service today and we look forward for what’s to come.
