Gasav Ne Fäeag Rotuạm Ta – Rotuman Language Week

Noa’ia ‘e mauri, gagaj atakoa!

For the last day of Rotuman Language week, the Vai family had taken part in  Rotuman Celebrations with the NZRF Mairani Group which was held at Marcellin College. Our very own Keri, Vilita’i, Rosa, Shalom and the family had spent a few weeks practicing and rehearsing for this very event and which was a great success.

It is very nice to see our church family immersing themselves in their culture and being apart of different groups in the community. Culture is something that allows an individual to be grounded, it can allow you to find your sense of belonging, and encourages you to teach the next generation the importance of knowing their culture and heritage.

The theme for Rotuman Language Week 2024 is:

Vetḁkia ‘os Fäega ma Ag fak hanua.

Sustaining our Language and Culture.

The Rotuman Language is a language that is slowly becoming endangered. To encourage speaking the language, if you would like to say ‘hello’ to someone, you can say “Noa’ia [nor-ah-‘ear].” Those who are apart of the Rotuman Community will be glad to know that others are giving it a go.

We take this time to remember the late Rosa Vai, who would have been very proud to see her children and grandchildren getting in and amongst the Rotuman Celebrations this week.

Fạiȧkse‘ea ma ạlalum!
