Our church had spent yet another week celebrating yet another Language Week alongside the rest of New Zealand.Â
The theme for this year was:Â
‘Mitamita I lau gagana, maua’a lou fa’asinomaga’ – Be proud of your language and grounded in your identity.Â
When we think about the themes of the different language weeks, there is a running theme. However, the main message is around encouraging us to be proud of our culture and who we are as people. Alongside Samoan Language week, Samoa also celebrated 61 years of Independence on the 1st of June. All these different things are worth celebrating.Â
St Martins have a handful of Samoan families within the congregation and it is awesome to see the little celebrations that happen within our church and in our surrounding communities.Â
We hope that you feel encouraged by this years theme for Samoan Language Week and that you continue to challenge yourself in learning the Samoan Language and knowing your roots. Ask your grandparents and your parents about what it is like living on the beautiful island of Samoa, and I hope that this can start a conversation that helps you shapes your identity.Â
Fa’afetai tele lava.
