Noaˈia ˈe mạuri gagaj ˈatakoa – Greetings everyone!
Last week was Rotuman Language Week.
Rotuma is an island not very known by many. It is very important within our church that we celebrate the different ethnic groups because we are a very diverse community. It brings us great joy to be able to celebrate diversity within our church and to see everyone engaging and taking part but to ensure that there is a sense of belonging. Even though Rotuman Language Week has passed, we will still want to acknowledge it. The theme for this year’s Rotuman Language Week was:
“Vetḁkia ‘os Fäega ma Ag fak hanua – Sustaining our Language and Culture”
It so happens that we have a couple of families within our church family who identify themselves as Rotuman and so it seems quite fitting that we acknowledge the Rotuman culture and work towards sustaining their language and their culture.
Fun fact:
In Aotearoa, we only have 1,000 speakers of the Rotuman Language.
